The Final Days — I

Paint & fixative & more charcoal

on Stations V, VII, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XIX, XX, XXI

The work now is one of chiaroscuro... washes of fixative, sometimes on crumbled charcoal, washes of white oil paint — or gray — and more direct charcoal drawing, revisiting each canvas...

For each Station I have first given the most recent version from which today's work started.

Station V — Simon takes the load a while...

Station VII — a mocking Crown of Thorns is forced upon Jesus...

or: Will I ever get that arm right?!

Station XII — the Flagellation...

Jesus, His hands tied, is suspended by that rope that ties His hands, and slumps to see only... the skies.

The higher you are torn to look, the less the lower reveals; yet try it, there is always between the eyes a sense of one's nose & cheeks and the power of one's self not to see what is worst off...

Station XIII — He is nailed to the cross...

  new detail:

In the earlier version [left] I had not made it clear that the knee of whomever is poising the nail, before hammering it through the wrist of Jesus, holds the hand down in place with that knee...

Station XIV — He is offered an anaesthetic based on vinegar...

  detail:

The detail shows the heap of skulls already littering Golgotha...

Station XV — an uncomprehending Roman spears His side...

Station XIX — with two disciples, He breaks bread at Emmaus...

    detail:

Station XX — breakfast by the sea after fishing...

    detail:

Seven gathered by the sea to take sunrise breakfat with Jesus who, cross-legged at the little fire, has prepared eight fish with eight beakers from which to drink; the others are busy with the boat and the much-strained nets...

Station XXI — Thomas requires proof...

Thomas required proof of the wounds both to 'hand' and ribs; here in His right hand Jesus holds out His left hand for Thomas to inspect the wrist and wound...

The Final Days — II

That's to say: the Final Day...

These are the finished images.

Well, one never quite knows...

Please note that these photographs have been quickly taken on a bad rainy day, the day of the completion of the images, and offer but a guide to the actual paintings...
