Looking to Sea and Looking to Land at the Col de Canadel

The Col de Canadel links the St.Tropez aerodrome to the sea to the south and affords a steep look south down to the Mediterranean as well as north out across the hillocks of the Var. The contours of the rusty land are peppered especially with pine trees which soften the view.

This is one of a series of portraits of David Hockney after his anecdote about how awful he found it to move about on foot in Florence in downpours the day after having lunched with me on a sunny silent terrace in France... One of the canvases (catalogue p.18 and used for the Talbot Rice invitation card) is in his collection in Los Angeles.
