House Portraits Dossier:
Villa Arcadia,
Cap d'Antibes
Really what struck me here was the way that the old almost provençale farmhouse exterior (this must be at heart one of the oldest structures on Cap d'Antibes), with its oddly Georgian-rhythmed additional portico, lies up & round from the forbidding main gate, drawing you not only on up the curving path from the gate but then on round the exceptionally large pool, so that you see the façade a second time from a greater distance.
So, I made the pool the axis of wandering and constructed the fantasy as a gyroscopy focussed on one's orientation about the pool. hus it is seen as if from the far side, looking back onto the façade, as well as from within the home. The curving path therefore appears twice, once for each direction (going off top right and bottom left) while you see onto and from the house (top left, bottom right). Once the logic of this promenade had settled within me, the rest fell into place...
