The English Architect's House
at Montauroux, Var
This house seems never quite to be finished and the painting reflects that, not only with bucket & spade and tarpaulin but also with one or two incomplete passages around the sunset terrace, the happy spot where we would finish the day's work in the company of that steely blue refracted light of a gin-&-tonic. The sunsets make a startling reward for the day during which, no matter the heat, there is always the sensation that the house nestles in dappled light from many trees.
