Many will remember that the Jazz Attic was launched in 2005 with an exhibition of free-hanging canvases by Jonathon Brown; he's back this year with a new show and a new idea — Meltdown Magic. 

The Open Day is set for Saturday 11th July, from noon till whenever.

At the heart of the show will be seventeen canvases all 80 by 60 cms and all the same.  Eh?  Well, he has explained to me that never mind banking, being an artist in these times is a rocky run for a rascal.  He reckons that two thirds of his clients of the last ten years are unlikely to buy a painting for a while. 

"But we all need cheer," he adds, "when the real plunge took place I was in the process of talking turkey with a client who wanted to have maybe even 200 paintings for a hotel.  Since I have a way of painting in somewhat translucent layers, it means that even on a big painting each day's work is done in quite a short time before it all has to be left to dry for the next layer — so, there's time left in a day to work on far more than one picture.  I'd had the idea that I could do what I call 'editioned' paintings where on quite a number of canvases I follow the same design, making the same layer on lots of canvases each day. 

"The resulting edition would all be very nearly the same but also all hand-done and fresh, not at all like a reproduction.  I'd planned little pictures of Tuscany for instance, maybe 50 x 50, where I might have worked on thirty at a time such that after a fortnight there would be thirty paintings all built from about a dozen layers accumulated day by day.  You can see that the 200 would have been two months' work. 

"But come The Crunch I didn't have any samples — nor client! — and when the idea of a return to the Jazz Attic came up I thought that's what I'll do.  Then Sarah, my wife, suggested leaving one canvas out each day, so that each canvas reveals the progress of the layers to the 'final' picture.  I like this idea and that's the story these 17 canvases will tell.  And you see, one of the worst dilemmas an artist can face is to know when to stop — these pictures will also chronicle that decision.  The first canvas will be as spare as a Matisse drawing and a picture in its own right; then it'll work on up to the fully developped final one adorned with its painted-in golden frame...

"I'll hang them in groups and individually; it'll be fun to put 1 and 17 together, for instance, and 7, 8, 9 & 10 might make a nice tile arrangement.  There'll be all sorts of resonance — you know, like the Warhol grids of same images, as well as the peculiar history we have since Cézanne or so, whereby what would have counted as a mere sketch two hundred years ago counts as the 'finished' thing...  This idea takes that to its logical flourish. 

"The canvases will be initialled and will be priced at a level that will cheer people up.  Hence, Meltdown Magic!"

= La Crise en Cerise!!

L'idée est simple... ma technique d'huile sur toile m'oblige à ne travailler sur chaque toile que dix minutes par jour, car j'applique des couches fines sur une toile horizontale afin d'empêcher la peinture de couler.  C'est une technique que je perfectionne depuis plus de dix ans au courant desquels je me suis attaqué petit à petit à des toiles de plus en plus grandes  - afin d'alléger le travail journalier!

Mais soudain m'est venu l'idée que cette technique me permettait en effet de me pencher, simultanément, sur un nombre plus important de toiles de dimensions moyennes; et de cette démarche m'est venu l'idée de faire ce que j'appelle des toiles "éditionnées" - c'est-à-dire des toiles qui sont à première vue presque identiques, comme une édition d'une estampe, mais qui sont quand même toutes faites main. De là est né l'idée de base de Meltdown Magic, La Crise en Cerise - car la possibilité de toiles éditionnées me permet également de les vendre en quantité et à un prix beaucoup plus intéressant... les vendre surtout en série, en quantité importante suivant par exemple une commande venant d'un hôtel ou d'un restaurant...

Ensuite, lors de l'exposition proposée par Anita pour son "Jazz Attic" - son 'grenier-jazz' - à Lorgues, j'ai conçu l'idée de faire une série pour exposer ce principe... une vingtaine de toiles, peut-être, toutes semblables... mais c'est Sarah, ma femme, qui avait ensuite eu l'idée de montrer toutes les étapes, 'pli selon pli', suivant ainsi une évolution.  J'ai hésité mais je me suis mis au travail, tout d'abord par curiosité: on y trouve toute l'histoire dans la série, son évolution et son inspiration, ses calculs et ses hasards, les 17 "Fleurs du Bien", les 5 toiles du chemin de St Antonin du Var...

La méthode serait facilement appliquée à plusieurs thèmes tirés de mon travail - citons les Fleurs du Bien, les paysages du Var, de la Toscane ou de la Côte d'Azur, ou même les caractères caligraphiques chinoises...

L'ensemble peut nous enseigner des leçons sur une méthode artistique, en particulier (je l'espère) le fait qu'à chaque instant l'image, au fond inachevée, peut néanmoins contenir une intégralité, grâce notamment au dessin;  ce qui fait de la série à la fois une évolution explicative mais aussi un ensemble cohérent - ce qui pourrait donner un thème à, par exemple, un salon particulier ou une salle de restaurant.  Pensons aux chambres d'hôtel...  Voilà, la crise en cerise!
